AUSTIN ECHO

BRANDING

Designed by: Danny Marzari & Peyton Person

The Austin Echo is a rebranding project of the NBA G-League team the Austin Spurs.

Spurs affiliated content is not my own and belongs to the franchise of the NBA and the San Antonio Spurs. This is just a concept project.

CURRENT BRAND

The Austin Spurs are an NBA G-League Team. They serve as the minor league team for the San Antonio Spurs. While they represent their affiliation with the San Antonio team, they lack an identity as a stand alone team representing the city of Austin.

Most teams in the G-League will take up the branding of their Pro League affiliate, but some teams such as the Maine Red Claws, The Reno Bighorns, and the Rio Grande Valley Vipers have allowed their teams to have original and unique branding.

Being a growing and increasingly popular city, and the capital of Texas, it doesn’t quite do the city of Austin justice to just ride the coattails of the Spurs.

MISSION

Simply rebranding the Austin Spurs to something with a new name has been done in the past and shown to not being successful. The Austin Torros was the previous name before the Austin Spurs and didn't hold up what the city represents, so it's time for something different.

Creating an original brand and adding more excitement to the only semi professional sports team within Austin is crucial to create an identity for sporting events in Austin as a whole. Utilizing imagery that's well known in the Austin area and pulling inspiration from other Texas sports teams will play a big part in this project.

INSPIRATION

THE ECHO

COLOR PALETTE

The final decision was to rebrand the Austin Spurs as the Austin Echo and utilize the imagery of a bat to speak to the Mexican Free-Tailed Bats who are native to Austin.

The name “Echo” derives from a bats natural ability to see based on echo location, but also alludes to the intense volume of the passionate fans in the arena. The energy of the team is echoed through to the fans, and the fans reciprocate that energy back to the team with unmatched moral support.

The team will keep the silver and black color palette to continue to show it’s affiliation with the Spurs, but will also include an electric neon yellow to help intensify the energy and noise the team brings to fans and back.
